Shahid Kapoor in a still from Udta Punjab

Shahid Kapoor's Udta Punjab is in the middle of a storm as far as the censors are concerned. The film has run into trouble with the Censor Board, thanks to the usage of expletives in the film and the sensitive content. While the filmmakers battle it out with the censors, there are a few developments that have caught the attention of people.

After the Censor Board refused to issue a certificate to the Abhishek Chaubey-directed film, the Revising Committee of the Censor Board has now given even harsher suggestions to the makers, implementing which will help the makers obtain the certificate.
The Revising Committee has recommended suggestions with political undertones to the Udta Punjab makers.
It is being reported that the committee wants the film to be set in a fictional land rather than in Punjab, and has demanded a lot of cuts, which are against the "reality" of the movie. The film deals with the problem of the growing drug addiction among the youth of Punjab, and has a tagline that says 'Drugs Di Maa Di'.
Strangely, the Revising Committee is said to have taken the view that the film, which is based on the growing drug addiction among the youth in the state, is defamatory to Punjab.
Earlier too, the Akali Dal, the ruling party in Punjab, had objected to the movie. Sources close to the censors indicate that political pressure is being put on the board in the wake of Punjab elections, slated to happen early next year.
Udta Punjab has received much attention ever since the film was announced, mostly because of the fact that the film is directed at the youth. The highly-talked-about movie has Shahid Kapoor playing rockstar Tommy Singh in the lead role, and also stars Alia Bhatt,Kareena Kapoor Khan and Punjabi singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh in pivotal roles.
Udta Punjab is slated for a June 17, 2016 release, but whether or not the film receives a certificate from the Censor Board before that is yet to be seen
